3D model of the Matterhorn — the most famous pyramid of the Alps
The Matterhorn (4,478 m) rises in the Pennine Alps on the Swiss–Italian border above Zermatt. Its near-perfect four-sided pyramid is known even to people who have never been to the mountains; Edward Whymper made the first ascent in 1865.

For Switzerland we use lidar elevations with 2 m precision, so a model of about 3.6×3.6 km shows the Hörnli and Zmutt ridges, the glaciers and couloirs. Rocky sides emphasise how steeply the mountain rises from the valley.
